🔥 From Wax to Wonder: How Custom Jewelry Comes to Life at Jesse the Jeweler

Ever wonder how a custom engagement ring, a reimagined heirloom, or a bold anniversary gift goes from idea to heirloom?

At Jesse the Jeweler, Brevard County’s top-rated custom jewelry designer, that magic begins with a block of wax, a sharp eye, and a whole lot of fire.

Here’s how we use onsite lost wax casting to handcraft one-of-a-kind pieces you won’t find anywhere else.

What Is Wax Carving in Jewelry?

Wax carving is the process of sculpting a design in wax before casting it in metal. We do all our wax work and casting in-house, right here in Cape Canaveral.

At Jesse the Jeweler, we use:

  • Hard Wax: Feels like plastic, perfect for carving clean lines and strong shapes.

  • Soft Wax: Pliable sheets, ideal for adding bezels, texture, and flowing elements.

  • 3-D Printed Wax Models: perfect for intricate geometry, exact symmetry, or replicating digital CAD renderings.

What Are the Two Main Wax Carving Techniques?

➖ Subtractive Wax Carving

We file, drill, and carve away hard wax to shape the design.

➕ Additive Wax Building

We melt and apply soft wax using a heated tool to build up curves or textures.

Using both gives us total creative freedom to shape your design exactly how you imagine it.

How Lost Wax Casting Works (Yes—we do it onsite!)

Here’s the process we use in our Cape Canaveral shop to turn your wax model into solid gold, silver, or platinum:

1. Sculpt the Wax Model

We hand-carve it or 3D print it depending on the design.

2. Attach the Sprue

This wax rod channels molten metal into the mold.

3. Build the Wax Tree

If we’re casting multiples, we attach several wax models to a central sprue.

4. Invest the Flask

We pour in a special plaster (called investment) to form the mold.

5. Burnout in Kiln

The wax melts away in our kiln—leaving a perfect hollow mold behind.

6. Pour the Metal

While the flask is still hot, we pour molten gold or silver in, capturing every detail.

7. Quench & Reveal

We cool the flask in water and remove the rough casting.

8. Finish & Polish

After cutting off the sprue, we polish, set stones, engrave, and finish every detail by hand.

[FAQ Section]

💡 What is lost wax casting?

A technique where a wax model is replaced with molten metal using a heat-safe mold. We do it all onsite at Jesse the Jeweler.

💡 Why use wax instead of metal right away?

Wax lets us carve finer details and experiment with proportion before casting.

💡 How long does custom jewelry take?

Most pieces are ready in 4–6 weeks, but timelines vary based on design complexity.

💡 Can I recycle my gold?

Yes! In many cases, we can reuse your family gold in a new design.

Why It Matters

Custom jewelry should be personal, symbolic, and built to last. With onsite lost wax casting, we don’t outsource the magic—we make it here, in your community, with our own hands.

You’ll sit down with our in-house designers, collaborate on your design, and watch it come to life step by step—right here in Brevard County.

🧊 Want to Try Wax Carving Yourself?

If you got one of our wax kits —welcome! Here’s how to begin:

What You’ll Need:

  • Your wax piece (included)

  • A sewing needle, safety pin, thumbtack, or paperclip

  • Optional: small craft file or emery board

How to Start:

  1. Sketch first. On paper or directly on the wax—start with your initials, a ring outline, or a shape you love.

  2. Carve away. Use your sharp tool to dig, scrape, or draw into the wax. Go slow—wax is soft but holds detail.

  3. Refine it. Use a nail file or edge of a coin to smooth edges or add texture.

  4. Take a photo. We’d love to see what you made! Tag us or bring it into your consult.
